Saxophone Orchestra World Premiere

The Love Music Trust has commissioned Barbara Thompson, to write a piece for our Saxophone Orchestra to be premiered at the ‘Sandbach Concert Series’ on Wednesday 22nd February 7pm at St Mary’s Church Hall. The piece entitled ‘The Bells of London’ Barbara Thomson MBE is an English Jazz Saxophonist, Flautist and composer who has said

"I am a composer who seems to see music in very visual term The piece began one misty Sunday morning while recording the great bells pealing out over London. It was an extraordinary and unexpected adventure which was inexplicably forgotten as the day passed and the real world flooded back in. But hearing those few random arpeggios triggered that memory. I hope you enjoy the result”

The world premiere of this piece will be showcased at Sandbach Concert Series. The ensemble would like to thank Andy Scott, for his time in working on the arrangement of ‘Bells of London’ both behind the scene and in the rehearsal room, it couldn’t have happened without him. The Saxophone Orchestra currently has 14 members and keeps growing. The Orchestra are also attending this year EurSax17 congress in Porto and shall also be playing the piece while they’re away. The Orchestra is led by Royal Northern College of Music graduate Jamie Sharp. The students of the Orchestra regularly play in many ensembles across Cheshire. To join the ensemble unnamed

Conducting Workshop with Russell Gray

On Saturday 21st January the Love Music Trust welcomed colleagues to the Fallibroome Academy to take part in a thoroughly engaging and rewarding conducting workshop.

Leading the afternoon's activities was Russell Gray who is currently holding posts of Adjunct Professor at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Australia), Principal Conductor of the Cambrian Philharmonic Orchestra (Wales), Musical Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland, and President of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors.
On the day delegates had the opportunity to work not only with Russell but also the award winning Crewe Cooperative Wind Band who were recently awarded Gold at the National Youth Wind Band festival. Six delegates with a range of conducting experience from complete beginner to those that have been working with bands for years took part, learning and practising a wide range of skills and techniques.
One of the delegates, Louise Renshaw who is Director of the Macclesfield Youth Brass Band said ' The conducting workshop was superb. Russell's advice on technique was amazing from getting your head out of the score and how to turn over a page without the band noticing, through passive and active beats, but he also talked about the entire role, psychology and much more!'
The Love Music Trust would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the Crewe Cooperative Wind Band for their efforts, Fallibroome Academy for hosting the event and of course Russell who we are looking forward to working with again at the end of April when we hold our inaugural Orchestral residential weekend at the Conway Center in Anglesey.
